No More Coal Rally

Thursday, May 15, in Madison at the Alliant Energy Expo Center (John Nolan Drive and Rimrock Road). Rally to bring attention to the negative health and economic impact of future coal plant construction in Wisconsin and Iowa. The rally co-incides with Alliant’s Shareholders Meeting at the Expo Center. There will be a ratepayer’s meeting following the rally with speakers Thomas Sanzillo, from TR Rose and Assoc., and Charlie Higley, CUB. Town Hall Meeting: Iraq War & Depleted Uranium Weapons

A Town Hall Meeting to discuss the US occupation of Iraq, nuclear weapons funding and the use of Depleted Uranium (DU) weapons by the US millitary in Iraq. The keynote speaker is Mr. Sami Rosouli of the Iraqi Peacemakers. Citizen’s Hearing on Complex Transformation

This public hearing will discuss the US and international nuclear weapons policy, including “Complex Transformation” which propses to refurbish the US nuclear weapons stockpile with $150 billion. Fighting Global Warming: The Oregon Model

Friday, March 28, 7:00 PM at the Lowell Center (corner of Langdon & North Frances) in Madison. Dr. Catherine Thomasson will present current initiatives to combat global warming at four public policy levels — city of Portland, Mutnomah county, the state of Oregon and Tri-State (Oregon, Washington and California). She will discuss the impact of these initiatives on greenhouse gas emissions in the region. Dr. Thomasson is at Staff Physician at Portland STate University and immediate Past-President of PSR National. Green Medicine: Healthy Planet, Healthy People

April 14-15 in Madison at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center (One John Nolan Drive). This conference is designed for primary care physicians including family medicine and internal medicine, physicians assistants, nurses, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals. Participants will explore the connection between the health of the planet and the health of our population. The conference will explore the international sustainability movement, the effects of global warming on health and contamination and its impact on development and learning. Forum on Iran: History, Culture & the Nuclear Dispute

Dr. Catherine Thomasson will speak on the culture of Iran and history of US-Iran relations, the threat of nuclear war, and other related topics. Dr. Thomasson visited Iran in March 2007 as part of a peace delegation sponsored by the Fellowship of Reconciliation and attended meetings with Iranian religious, education and political leaders. Global Warming Speakers’ Training: Health Impacts & Solutions

March 29, 2008, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Bethel Lutheran Church (312 Wisconsin Avenue), Madison. Dr. Catherine Thomasson has presented information on global warming all over the country in her role as President of PSR National. Dr. Thomasson will share her experience, expertise and resources to train speakers in Wisconsin. Speakers are asked to commit to 3-4 presentations and will receive the five hour training, global warming resources and a powerpoint presentation to use. The training is free, lunch will be provided and registration is required. Co-Sponsored by the UW Department of Family Medicine and Clean Wisconsin.

Hiroshima-Nagasaki A-Bomb Poster Exhibition

The Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation is sponsoring the posters to display throughout the state of Wisconsin. The exhibit focuses the attention of the public on the impact of the US bombings on the cities and citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945.

UWM Conference on Climate Change & Sustainable Development

April 24 - 25, 2008, at the Doubletree Hotel in Milwaukee. This conference will discuss the global issue of climate change in the regional context of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes. Twenty-five speakers will present perspectives from government, business, health, and others. The health program is chaired by Ann Banda from the UWM College of Nursing, and is only one hour of the program. The conference is sponsored by the UW - Milwaukee Global Climate Change and Sustainable Development Initiative. Governor’s Task Force on Global Warming

July 27th, 2007

Governor Jim Doyle has created the task force to 1) identify specific short term and long term goals for Wisconsin green house emissions reductions, 2) present viable, actionable policy recommendations to the Governor to reduce green house gas emissions in Wisconsin, and 3) identfy ongoing opportunities to address global warming locally while growing our state’s economy and creating new jobs. The task force meets monthly and is currently developing their recommendations, which should be available to the public after February 19th. Public hearings were held in August 2007 and March 2008.

There will be a Task Force meeting on May 1 that the public can observe. For more information about the time and location of the meeting, see the DNR website below.
